How to Make a Homemade Crunchwrap Supreme

There are two types of people in this world: the ones who love Taco Bell and the ones who don’t. While fast-food connoisseurs will likely forever be split on their love for this chain, even the most ardent Taco Bell haters will find it hard to turn down a homemade version of the Crunchwrap Supreme.

Crunchy, cheesy and beefy, this Crunchwrap Supreme recipe might be even better than the original.

What’s in a Crunchwrap Supreme?

Taco Bell’s Crunchwrap Supreme is a clever marriage between a cheesy quesadilla and crunchy beef tostada. The original recipe consists of an oversized flour tortilla wrapped around layers of seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, nacho cheese and a crunchy yellow corn tostada.

While the classic combination of ingredients remains popular, Taco Bell also offers customers the option to modify the recipe. Add beans, guacamole, shredded cheese or pickled jalapenos, or swap out the ground beef for chicken or steak.

Tools You’ll Need

You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment to make a perfect Crunchwrap Supreme. Just grab a couple basic kitchen tools, such as a large nonstick skillet or griddle, spatula and cutting board.

If you want to take it up a notch, a panini press is a great gadget to have on hand. Flipping a Crunchwrap without spilling all the tasty filling can be risky business. A panini press will allow you to grill both sides of your Crunchwrap simultaneously—no flipping required.

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 yellow corn tortillas, about 6 inches in diameter
  • 4 extra-large flour tortillas, at least 10 inches in diameter
  • 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese

  • 1 large tomato, diced

In a large skillet, saute the diced onions in 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Cook until the onions soften and begin to turn translucent; about 3-5 minutes. Add the ground beef and brown until no pink remains. Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the water and taco seasoning. Stir to combine and simmer for 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Step 2: Prepare crunchy tostada shells

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Next, rub both sides of the corn tortillas with the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Arrange on a large, parchment-lined sheet pan and bake for 7 minutes. Flip each tortilla over and bake for an additional 3-5 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove and sprinkle lightly with salt.

Editor’s tip: Some grocery stores stock crispy tostada shells. Feel free to buy these instead to save some time when preparing your homemade Crunchwrap Supreme.

Step 3: Warm flour tortillas

Wrap the flour tortillas in a damp paper towel and then microwave on a large plate for 60 seconds until soft and pliable. Set aside.

Step 4: Assemble

Lay one of the large burrito-size flour tortillas down on a clean surface. Sprinkle the center with shredded Mexican cheese, then top with seasoned beef and cheese queso. Top the queso with one of the crispy tostadas. Spread a generous amount of sour cream over the crispy tostada and then top with shredded lettuce and tomato (along with any other desired toppings).

Step 5: Fold

Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Then, begin folding your Crunchwrap by taking one edge of the tortilla and bringing it in toward the center. Continue to bring the edges of the flour tortilla toward the center as tightly as you can, holding them in place with one hand as you work.

Set aside, fold side down then repeat steps 4 and 5 with the remaining ingredients.

Step 6: Cook until golden

Stovetop: Carefully transfer the Crunchwrap to the pan, with the folds on the bottom. Brush the top of the Crunchwrap with a bit of olive oil and cook for 1-2 minutes until the tortilla becomes crisp and golden. Carefully flip the Crunchwrap over and continue to cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, or until the other side of the Crunchwrap is golden. Remove promptly, cook the remaining Crunchwraps and then serve warm.

Panini Press: To cook your Crunchwrap using a panini press, preheat your press to medium and brush both sides with olive oil. Place your folded Crunchwrap, with the folds on the bottom, in the center of your press and then close. Cook until golden on both sides and heated through. Cook times will vary depending on the model of your press.

How to Customize Your Crunchwrap

The best part about a homemade Crunchwrap is there are no limitations on what you can fill yours with. Make some homemade pork carnitas or opt for seasoned tofu instead of ground beef. You can also make your Crunchwrap healthy by packing it with other veggies. Here are a few ideas:

  • Raw, grilled or pickled onions
  • Grilled bell peppers
  • Chopped kale or spinach
  • Black beans
  • Refried beans
  • Sweet corn
  • Salsa
  • Cilantro
  • Queso fresco
  • Spicy ranch dressing
  • Fresh or pickled jalapenos

How to Make a Crunchwrap Without Giant Flour Tortillas

If you can’t find giant flour tortillas at your local supermarket, all hope is not lost. You’ll just need 2-3 extra standard flour tortillas to help cover the small hole that will be on the top of your Crunchwrap once it’s folded. Seal it by cutting a small circle from a spare tortilla and tuck it under the folds so your Crunchwrap’s filling is completely enclosed. Then cook as directed above.
