We Dipped Our Chips Into 8 Brands and Found the Best Guacamole

Editors Picks Guacamole 1200x800

While there are plenty of addicting dip recipes out there, there’s one that I can always count on to be totally gone at the end of any party: guacamole. Who doesn’t love creamy avocado paired with lime, tomato, a hint of onion and maybe a bit of cilantro (but only if you’re one of those people who doesn’t think it tastes like soap)? Pair it with a great tortilla chip and you’ve got the perfect party snack.

Of course, homemade guacamole is always best, but when I’m in a party-planning pinch or if I’m just really craving a snack, I don’t have any problem picking up some premade guac at the store. That said, I want that guacamole to be darn good. So which brand is best?

What We’re Looking For in a Great Store-Bought Guacamole

Best guacamole brands in a taste test, labeled in bowls

The Taste of Home Test Kitchen snagged eight popular brands of store-bought guacamole. We were looking for these qualities in a good premade guacamole:

  • Flavor: The ideal guacamole should taste fresh and like a perfectly ripe avocado. Guac also needs more than just avocado flavor. Onion, tomato, lime, garlic, salt and cilantro are all welcome to the fiesta in good measure.
  • Texture: A good guacamole should have a bit of texture to it. We wanted to see some avocado chunks and bits of tomato and onion, too. If a guac is too smooth, it can be a bit baby food-like.
  • Appearance: We eat with our eyes so it’s important that the guacamole looked like something we’d want to dunk into.

We kept these criteria in mind and tried these brands: AldiCabo FreshGood FoodsSabraTrader Joe’sWhole FoodsWholly Guacamole and Yucatan.

Our Favorite Store-Bought Guacamole Brands

Runner-Up: Sabra Classic Guacamole

Best guacamole brand, Sabra Classic Guacamole

Score: 8.8/10

Sabra guacamole got plenty of high marks for its good looks, slightly chunky texture and great taste. This guacamole was a stand out thanks to a good dose of jalapeno flavor. This peppery taste made it unique but not too spicy. Sabra was also a favorite among citrus-lovers thanks to its healthy dose of lime. For guacamole that’s a bit of a standout, testers agreed that Sabra is the way to go. Try it with these authentic Mexican recipes.

Best in Show: Good Foods Chunky Guacamole

Best guacamole brand, Good Foods Chunky Guacamole

Score: 9/10

When it comes to the best guacamole from the store, the testers agreed that Good Foods was the tastiest of them all. This premade guac looked homemade and fresh coming out of the container. When we dipped in chip after chip, we were happy to find chunks of avocado, bits of tomato and just the right amount of cilantro. As someone who is not the biggest fan of cilantro, I can assure you, anti-cilantro folks out there will still enjoy this one. Another bonus here was the guac had the right amount of lime and salt—something other brands really seemed to struggle with.

In the end, Good Foods was crowned our favorite. By the end of the test, this bowl was absolutely clean and that’s truly the best marker of good guacamole.

The Bottom Line

If I learned one thing in this test it’s that not all store-bought guacamoles are created equal. The flavor of premade guacs varied widely. In the end, only two brands received especially good marks. Both Sabra and Good Foods had the right homemade texture, fresh flavor and extras to satisfy Taste of Home‘s testing crew. Either brand would be welcome in your fridge.

Just be sure to snag the best tortilla chips to go with your guac pick! And maybe mix up one of these Mexican cocktails to go with your snack.
