Is expensive champagne always worth it?
Nothing says celebration like a glass of Champagne. But with bottle prices in the triple digits, raising a glass of bubbly is often saved for the most special occasions. It doesn’t have to be that way! There are loads of cheap champagne and sparkling wine options available. In fact our Taste of Home Executive Culinary Director, Sarah Farmer, prefers cheap champagne!
Sarah says, “Some of the best bottles of bubbly, the ones that you may enjoy the taste of the most, are the less expensive options. The question is, what are you giving up by going with a champagne or other sparkling wine that you can easily afford and that won’t break the bank? Well, you won’t get that decadent yeastiness or real concentration of flavor with the lower end bubbly, since these wines spend less time fermenting in the bottle versus the high-end ones. And the grape blends will be different. But I’m okay with all that. I guess my taste buds prefer a less yeasty flavor.”
The Differences between Champagne, Cava and Prosecco
Not sure about the difference? Sarah explains, “Great-tasting wines are made all over the world and at different price points. Champagne, in the northeast region of France, is just one place. Sparkling Cava from Spain is a great example of wine that has an excellent price to value ratio. If you prefer a sweeter wine, try a sparkling Moscato. If you like a not-too-sweet-but-pleasantly-fruity taste, go for Prosecco. Find your happy place with a less expensive, practical champagne or sparkling wine.”
