We Tried Heinz’s New Spicy Ketchups and They Really Turn Up the Heat

As younger consumers thirst for spicier condiments, and with traditional ketchup sales stagnant, Heinz is betting big on its new line of spicy ketchups launching this week.

Three new ketchup flavors at three different spice levels will be available: chipotle (with medium heat), jalapeño (hot), and habanero (hottest). The company is also launching its very first hot sauce, the Hot Heinz 57 Sauce. This follows Heinz’s earlier foray into spicy condiments a few years ago with its Mayoracha and Honeyracha sauces.

“We know consumers are hungry for a wider variety of spicy sauces and flavors, and as a consumer-obsessed brand at the forefront of food culture, we saw an exciting opportunity to innovate around our fans’ evolving preferences,” said Lindsay Davis, Brand Manager, Heinz Innovation at the Kraft Heinz Company.

What Inspired Heinz’s Spicy Ketchups?

Nearly half of all U.S. Millennial and Gen Z condiment buyers regularly use spicy sauces, and also actively seek a greater variety of spicy flavor options. With topics like #spicy and #hotsauce generating billions of views on TikTok, it’s clear that people can’t get enough of hot and spicy sauces.

Those trends served as the key drivers behind the Heinz Hot Varieties innovation strategy. “Listening to insights gleaned from our audience showed us that a sauce’s heat source really matters to them, which served as a north star in creating new products with curated and flavorful, pepper-specific bases,” Davis said.

I Tried Them—Here’s What I Thought

I tested all three spicy ketchup flavors on a batch of oven-fried potatoes. I preferred the hottest of the three, habanero flavored, as would most people who really seek out spicier hot sauces. But all were very good, with a good balance of tangy, sweet tomato and heat from the pepper. If you like a little bit of heat, I would recommend adding one of the Heinz spicy ketchups to your condiment rotation.

Where Can I Get Them?

These spicy ketchups and the hot sauce are available at nationwide retailers beginning April 4. You can snag the ketchups in 14-ounce bottles, retailing for about $3.99. The Hot Heinz 57 Sauce can be found in 10-ounce bottles for about $5.59 a bottle.
