How to Make Green Goddess Dip

This green goddess salad—a mixture of cabbage, cucumbers and scallions in an herby sauce—recently gained fame thanks to TikTok. But the origins of green goddess salad dressing date back to 100 years ago, when it was first served at a San Francisco hotel. Here, we take the classic flavor of the dressing and transform it into a tangy green goddess dip.

What Makes It Green Goddess?

The hallmark components of the dressing are some sort of dairy, an acid (citrus juice or vinegar) and lots of fresh herbs. The result is a creamy, tangy and verdant dressing/dip. It’s a great recipe to master because it adds a bright freshness to anything you pair it with. And it’s perfect for using up any leftover herbs!

Green Goddess Dip Recipe

This recipe from Taste of Home contributor Isabel Minunni from Poughkeepsie, New York makes 3 cups of dip. If you don’t have all the herbs listed below, just substitute more of the ones you do have—making sure the volume of herbs stays roughly the same.

Ingredients

Green Goddess Dip ingredients arranged on a white wood surface

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1-1/2 cups fat-free sour cream
  • 2 medium ripe avocados, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 garlic clove, halved
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Assorted fresh vegetables, for serving

Directions

Step 1: Combine ingredients in a food processor

In a food processor, combine all the dip ingredients from the olive oil through the black pepper. Puree until smooth. Refrigerate until serving. (You can make the dip in a blender as well, but you may have to add a few tablespoons of water to get it going.)

Step 2: Serve the dip

Transfer the dip to a bowl and serve with fresh vegetables. You’re all set!
