Rum Runner Tips
Where did the rum runner recipe originate?
Supposedly, the drink originated in Islamorada, Florida at the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar. The cocktail was invented as a means of using up excess liquor before new inventory arrived. As for the catchy name, legend has it that the drink is named after actual "rum runners" who transported alcohol during Prohibition. Rum was sourced in the Bahamas, then smuggled into Florida speakeasies by boat.
How can you make a rum runner your own?
Swap the rum in this recipe for spiced or coconut rum, or replace the orange and pineapple juice with your favorite fruit juice, like lime or mango. Fruit punch would make a good substitute as well. The banana and blackberry liquors can also be swapped for what you have on hand. Like the original recipe—use up what you have!
What type of glass do you use to serve a rum runner?
A rum runner fits in a classic highball, but for an island feel you can use other
cocktail glasses such as a hurricane or margarita glass loaded up with fruit. If you liked this rum runner recipe, try other
rum cocktails that will whisk you off to the tropics. Then, learn about all of the
classic rum drinks you should know if you keep rum stocked in your home bar.
