There are so many ways to eat burrata: on top of pizza, with fruit (like grilled nectarines) or made into a charcuterie-inspired burrata board. But nothing beats the beauty and simplicity of burrata toast. Here’s how to make classic burrata toast in four simple steps, plus five variations for the ultimate shareable snack.
What Is Burrata?
Burrata is a large, round ball of soft cheese. It’s made with an outer shell of mozzarella and filled with cream and bits of mozzarella (aka stracciatella). This Italian cheese has a rich and buttery flavor with an excellent texture contrast, thanks to the soft shell and creamy center. Burrata used to be a lesser-known type of cheese, but it’s everywhere now!
The process of making burrata starts the same way as mozzarella (which is why mozz makes a great substitute for burrata). The cheese is made by taking milk and heating it so the burrata is pasteurized. It’s then set with rennet and shredded into curds. Some of the curds are formed into a pouch to make the shell of the burrata. The other curds are stretched and soaked in cream, then stuffed into the shell of the burrata.
How to Make Basic Burrata Toast
Remember that burrata tastes best when served at room temperature, so plan ahead!
Ingredients
- 1 slice hearty bread, toasted (such as sourdough)
- 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
- 2 ounces burrata cheese (about 1/4 cup)
- 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
- Dash freshly ground pepper

Step 1: Drizzle toast with olive oil
You’ll want a hearty slice of bread that’s able to hold up to the creamy burrata, so we recommend sourdough. Also, make sure your toast is nice and golden brown. If you don’t have a toaster, there are plenty of easy ways to make toast.
Step 2: Spread burrata over toast
Place the burrata in a bowl, slice it open with a butter knife and smear it on the bread. Or, you can set the burrata ball directly on top of the toast, slice it open and spread it there.
Step 3: Sprinkle with salt and pepper
Adding a sprinkling of salt and pepper is a simple way to heighten the flavor of the burrata. Because burrata is such a light cheese, going the extra step to use fresh cracked black pepper and sea salt instead of regular salt will really make a difference.
Step 4: Drizzle with additional olive oil (optional)
Because this olive oil will act as a finishing ingredient, we recommend using quality olive oil.
5 Ways to Top Your Burrata Toast

Strawberry Basil
Slice two fresh strawberries. Fan them out on burrata. Drizzle with one teaspoon of balsamic glaze. Sprinkle with chopped fresh basil, salt and pepper.
For an elevated presentation, chiffonade the basil. Simply stack the leaves on top of each other, roll them up tightly and cut into thin strips. The basil will look like little pieces of confetti on your toast!
Roasted Cherry Tomato
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Toss 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes with 1/2 teaspoon olive oil and place on a rimmed baking sheet. Roast until tomatoes begin to burst, about 10 minutes. Spread tomatoes over burrata and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Editor’s Tip: Don’t have time to preheat the oven? You can also cook the tomatoes in a pan on the stovetop. Saute on medium heat until the tomatoes have burst, about 10-15 minutes.
Avocado
Cut a quarter of a medium-ripe avocado. Slice the avocado into thin segments and fan out across burrata. Drizzle with 1 teaspoon olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Properly store the avocado for later use.
Hot Honey Lemon
Drizzle burrata with 2 teaspoons of hot honey. Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest, salt and pepper. Make sure your honey is runny, and decrystallize it if need be.
If you don’t have hot honey on hand, drizzle regular honey (make sure it’s real and good quality!) and sprinkle red chili flakes on top.
Apricot Almond
Top burrata with 2 teaspoons of apricot preserves. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of toasted and sliced almonds, salt and pepper.
Toast almonds in a pan on the stovetop for easier control. Regularly stir the almonds as they cook. As soon as they begin to brown, transfer them to a plate to cool. They will keep cooking as they cool!
