We’re Can’t Get Over These Viral Caky Matcha Brownie Cookies

We here at Taste of Home are serious cookie monsters. From coffee shortbread to gochujang caramel cookies, we’re always looking for the next trendy treat to make for friends and family. And this spring, we’re particularly obsessed with a viral recipe from TikTok for matcha brownie cookies. They perfectly combine two of our favorite desserts, plus add the scrumptious green tea for a flavorful twist. Here’s how you can make these delectable cookies for yourself!

What Are Matcha Brownie Cookies?

Matcha brownie cookies are a delicious combination of crispy cookies and chewy white chocolate brownies. With the addition of matcha tea powder, the cookies have a beautiful green color and earthy-sweet flavor. Their tops are beautifully crinkly, like brownies, while the insides remain caky and soft.

The recipe was created by TikToker Ermalinda (@perfectpalate) and it has already received almost 200,000 likes. Check out the original video for yourself below.

How Can I Make Matcha Brownie Cookies?

Before you start, you’ll need to acquire matcha green tea powder. You can find it in most grocery stores or online on Amazon, for instance. Additionally, in the original recipe, Ermalinda does not use any salt, but if you use unsalted butter, I suggest adding 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the dry ingredients. The original recipe was written in grams and Celsius, so I translated it into imperial measurements.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons matcha powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Directions

Step 1: Get your oven ready

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2: Combine ingredients

Place the white chocolate and butter together in a medium bowl. Microwave for 2 minutes and stir until melted and smooth. In a separate large bowl, combine the sugar, egg and vanilla. Using a stand or hand mixer, cream together for 5 minutes until frothy and smooth. Pour the white chocolate mixture into the sugar mixture and beat for another 30 seconds until combined. Add the flour, matcha powder and baking powder and mix for another 30 seconds.

Step 3: Form the cookies

Using an ice cream scoop, drop the cookies onto a parchment paper-covered baking sheet.

Step 4: Pop ’em in the oven

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until cooked through and crinkled on top.

Step 5: Enjoy

Let cool for a couple of minutes, then enjoy!

What else can I make with matcha powder?

If you, like us, are excited to use up all that matcha in your spring baking, be sure to test out other sweets like this matcha bark and raspberry matcha cake roll. And if you’re more of the drink type, try our copycat Starbucks green tea Frappuccino, or these elegant matcha martinis.
